How New Moms Can Practice Self Care

As a new mom, you’re spending a lot of time caring for your baby and there is so much joy in the process. But there are times when motherhood gets overwhelming, and you need time to take care of yourself so that you’ll be whole emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Here are some ways that you can practice self-care with a newborn.

Start a Journal

This is something you can do while nursing your baby or while he takes a nap. In the journal, write about both the good and bad days you’re experiencing as a new mom. This gives you an outlet to express your feelings while getting some downtime.

Get Some Fresh Air

Another idea would be to put your baby in his stroller or infant carrier and go for a 30-minute walk with him. Fresh air is great for your mood, and it gives you a chance to still feel like yourself even while caring for your little one. If your baby is being watched by your partner or grandparent, use this time to go on the walk.

Slowly Start a Workout Routine

Although it is not recommended that you begin your workout routine for at least six weeks after childbirth, this is something you can do once that time comes. Thanks to online fitness videos and DVDs, you’re able to work out without going to the gym. You don’t have to start out with high-intensity exercises. You might do Pilates, slow lunges, or squats then progress towards the more challenging ones.

Prepare a Tasty Homemade Snack

For the days when you won’t be able to run to the store to grab a snack. One idea would be to make homemade trail mix. In a bowl combine some broken pretzels, raisins, chocolate chips, sliced almonds, and a little honey. Or you can make a healthy fruit salad with watermelon chunks, pineapple chunks, chopped mint leaves, a half cup of diced oranges, and some cinnamon.
