The Truth About Beer And Milk Production

Happy New Year!!!

It’s been told for centuries that drinking beer will increase milk supply when breastfeeding. Can this be true? The thought of sipping a beer and unwinding from the stress of the day could sound rather appealing and it would be good for your milk production? Hold on, though. Before you slam those glasses in the freezer so they’ll be nice and frosty, let us fill you in on the truth of the matter.

Back in the day, beer was brewed differently than it is today, not only that, the ingredients have changed, too. Most of the grains and herbs used for making beer, then, were galactagogues.  A galactagogue is a food, herb or drug known to increase milk production. Beer had a lower alcohol content and more nutritional value, so the good outweighed the bad.

Today, the opposite is true. Commercial brewing practices have increased the alcohol content and changed the ingredients so the galactagogue theory is no more. In fact, the higher alcohol content can decrease milk production.  However, it’s okay to have those frosty glasses at the ready, doctors agree that an occasional beer followed by a waiting period before feeding your baby will do no harm.

Even though we know herbs contain galactagogues, using them for medicinal purposes can be tricky. Quality is important, as well as the correct dosage, it’s suggested that you consult with your doctor regarding use rather than self medicating. There are other foods known to increase milk production. Breastmilkbooster.com listed their favorites. They are:

  • spinach and other dark, leafy green vegetables
  • other vegetables, such as broccoli, winter squash, green beans and collard greens
  • almonds
  • oatmeal
  • sesame seeds
  • garbanzo beans

Other tips to increase milk supply are feeding your baby frequently, switching breasts mid-feeding, and getting plenty of rest. Stress can also, decrease your milk flow, you know. One way to relieve stress is to have all the knowledge you need, literally, at your fingertips!
